Steve Jobs (1955-2011), the world has lost an innovator

Like many of you, we were shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve has been an inspiration to all in the computer technology field, and has been a idol for us here as well. Steve started Apple Computer in his garage, along with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne, in 1976.

There may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented.
In 1985 Steve started a new venture with the creation of NeXT Computer, and although it ultimately was not successful, NeXT was bought by Apple and became the basis for Apple’s OS X operating system. The NeXT web application framework called WebObjects was also used in 1997 to build the Apple website, store, MobileME, as well as the iTunes Store and is still being used today.

In 1986, Steve bought a company called The Graphics Group which specialized in computer graphics and special effects. This company is better known by the new name that Steve gave it, Pixar. Pixar is responsible for some of the world’s best known animated movies, which were produced through a partnership with Disney. If you have children you have most likely seen several of Pixar’s movies:

  • Toy Story
  • A Bug’s Life
  • Toy Story 2
  • Monsters Inc.
  • Finding Nemo
  • The Incredibles
  • Cars
  • Ratatouille
  • WALL-E
  • Up
  • Toy Story 3

However, Steve is best known for his work at Apple.  Upon returning to Apple 1996, Steve’s innovation and leadership would lead Apple in producing devices that have changed the world.  Although the iPod was what catapulted Apple in the direction of mobile devices and is still the most successful portable music player ever created, Jobs will forever be known for the iPhone.  As President Obama said in his statements after Steve’s passing, “there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented.”

Microsoft founder Bill Gates had the following to say:

“I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.

The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.”

Statement from Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook:

Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.

Whether you are a Mac or a PC, either way, you have to admit that the world has lost a visionary. He will be sadly missed.
